i say this about every 2 seconds of my life but everyone should read "the monstrumologist" by rick yancey

he did the fifth wave, but imo that book sucks and the monstrumologist series is his better series

it does have a lot of gore and horror themes (it's about monster scientists), and the overarching theme of the books is of people slowly becoming the things they hunt and i love it sniff
