    Today was the day that Green had been waiting for. With more than enough help from Mateo as well as motivation from many others, the barn and pasture for the goats had finally been completed. The next stage had been trading for livestock, which was easy enough with his contacts. And so finally, after stacking baskets of supplies on the back of a wagon, the traders passed over a small herd of five goats, all lead with their own lead ropes.

Next was the task of leading these damn things into the barn, the stubborn creatures far more interested in all of the vegetation around them. ❝ Oh, come on, mate. ❞ Green grumbled, trying to gently tug the lead rope for the one goat he lead who had decided it was far more interesting to eat grass than follow the leader. Green lifted his gaze desperately from the goat to the others who had chosen to help transfer the livestock - hopefully they were a little better with livestock than Green was.

— all their hard work was finally paying off. green and mateo had worked so tirelessly on this project. sure, while others had popped in occasionally to do their own share, mateo liked to think it was his and green’s hard work that truly made it all come together. it felt almost surreal to be bringing the goats towards the completely barn and pasture. the stubborn goats weren’t making it any more dream-like, though, that was for sure.

he shook his head as the goat green lead got distracted by grass, mateo chuckling to himself as he tugged his goat along. “guess i was lucky in picking this one, eh?” he noted as he strolled by, the other goat briefly getting deterred until mateo tugged it along. with that, he led the goat into the barn and got him all settled in. “hard to believe we actually did this,” he remarked towards green, turning his gaze to look over at the other man. to say he was proud was an understatement.

    Eventually, all of the goats were lead into the barn, Green shutting them in before he leaned against the gate, trying to fight off a small smile. It felt like this job would never end, and it probably never would've if it weren't for Mateo's knowledge and determination. Despite his own manpower towards this job, Green knew that he only really had his friend to thank - without him, they would've been pretty damn goatless.

❝ I know, right? ❞ He agreed, straightening up before grinning towards the man. ❝ We got milk for days now with these things. ❞ He gestured towards the livestock before patting Mateo's shoulder proudly. He paused for a moment, peering back towards the animals once more before asking vaguely, ❝ You lived on a ranch, yeah?... Did you ever have goats? ❞ Green hoped he did. He didn't know how to look after them, so maybe Mateo had some insight on how to.

— “i bet we could trade some of that milk for other goods, too,” he suggested, lifting a hand up to pat green’s back in response to the man patting his shoulder proudly. his hand lingered there as he gazed at all their work. his eyes settled on the goats for a bit as green paused, only flitting over after the man’s vague question. he laughed softly, squeezing green’s shoulder before letting the man go.

“we had plenty. don’t you worry about a thing; i’ll look after them. maybe i could teach you a thing or two so you become a goat expert, too,” he hummed, putting his hands in his pockets. “we’ve got this.” they have come this far; mateo wouldn’t let green down.

    ❝ Yeah! I was thinking that. What else can be made with milk? Cheese? Butter? ❞ Green threw out suggestions, a proud smile sat comfortably on his lips as he leaned into his friend's touch. When he asked vaguely about the goats, it was clear to see the intention of his question. He didn't know a thing about livestock; as a man who'd grown up in the city, why would he ever have needed to know a thing about goats?

Mateo, on the other hand, seemed to be quite the expert. He was wise beyond his years - it was clear to see - and so no wonder Green took his advice seriously. This man was a damn genius. ❝ Yeah? ❞ He questioned with an eager smile, tipping his head to look over at Mateo. ❝ I think that'd be cool. Imagine me: goat expert. Has a good ring to it, huh? ❞ He kidded, nudging Mateo lightly with his elbow.

— mateo and greenie came from two completely different worlds. mateo had been raised on his family’s vast ranch, never had to deal with much trouble or conflict until the loner’s came and set fire to his home. green, meanwhile, had been raised in the city. he’d faced trouble his whole life it felt like. he chuckled as green threw out suggestions. “anything you want, green.” he gestured towards the goats absently. “my abuela used to make this caramel called cajeta. one of the best things i've ever had.”

maybe their differences were what made them get along so well.

he considered green his best friend. he gave him a chance when nobody else would. he laughed as green nudged him with his elbow, choosing then to playfully push the other man. “don’t get too full of yourself, now. else i’ll never teach you.” his gaze wandered over towards the goats, then, watching as they went about adjusting to their new home. he sobered slightly. “can’t believe we did it.”
