— when mick wanted to become part of finn’s life, he silently made the promise to be there for everything the role asked for. through the ups and downs, the good times and the bad, he was sure to be there for them. help tara whenever he could. it was what he signed up to from the very start; he wanted to set a good example for finn and be there with him. that also included the days where finn was completely wound-up and needed to burn off energy somewhere other than the apartment. as much as finn probably could sprint laps throughout the home - and gladly would’ve by the looks of it - it seemed like a far better idea to take him outside.
he followed after the toddler as he made his way towards the swings. mick slowed to a stop nearby, shoving his hands in his pockets. “you want to play on the swings?” he asked, watching finn grab onto the swing, laying stomach-first on it. huffing a breath, mick opened his mouth to say something-- but finn stayed like that for only a moment before wandering off in search of better things. mick’s lips twitched into a smile, shaking his head as he settled to follow after. there weren’t that many kids around here, let alone kids around finn’s age; sometimes the best thing to offer was simply following finn around and letting him play. still, he didn’t think he had the humility enough to follow finn up the slide and go with him. he simply crossed his arms, watching with a ghost of a smile as the kid made his way up the steps. ”careful,” he warned, though it didn’t seem like finn paid much mind to it as he reached the top.
brows raised, he watched finn head towards the biggest slide. “you want to go down the big slide?”
“yeah!” even with the enthusiastic response, finn seemed a bit hesitant as he sat at the top of the slide. mick walked closer to the base of the slide, uncrossing his arms. “come on,” he urged softly, holding his arms down a bit and lowering himself down. “i’ll catch you.” it didn’t seem to take more coaxing than that, finn catching his lower lip between his teeth and going down the slide with an amused shriek. sure enough, mick was there to scoop him up in his arms with a lighthearted grunt of effort, holding him tight as he stood up.
“see? i told you i’d catch you.” the word was said with his lips twitching, barely fighting back a smile as he added, lowering his voice to utter, “too bad i’m never going to let you go, now.” the statement was met with finn wriggling around in his grasp, determined to get out.
"mickey! no!" he exclaimed, laughing and determined. and, although he easily could've held on to the squirming toddler, he let go of him with an exaggerated huff.
“alright, alright. you’re too strong.” finn seemed proud of himself, heading back towards the steps as he declared that he’d be going down the slide again. taking a few steps back from the slide, mick settled for placing his hands in his pockets and watching the toddler grow more confident in going down the big slide. a soft look in those blue eyes that were usually so impassive.
