She never liked wearing shoes, so feeling her feet sink into the soft, warm sand always calmed her after a day of physical and emotional stress.
That is until she came to the part of the border that lay on the beach. Her feet went cold when she saw who awaited her.
She still remembered the hitman. Large, hulking, huffing her name out with a warrant for her slaughter. Thankfully, her fellow Badlanders had managed to scare him away before he could find her. She sat, cowering in the shadows, too ashamed and afraid to show herself.
He didn't even compare to the terror that awaited Salem at the border. The silhouette made her want to run back to town and hide, just like she did with the hitman. Call someone, anyone for help.
But she knew, this time, she couldn't.
The woman was only 5'2, and it hit Salem that she was now taller than the figure before her, compared to the last time she'd seen her. Had it really been that long?
The woman's face lit up with recognition upon seeing Salem, her lips tight and brows furrowed.
"Elisa Barone!" She barked, "You come here right now with the goddamn money you took from me, you ungrateful whore! After all I've done for you, fed you and bathed you--"
"And when you kicked me out, Ma?" Salem realized she towered over her mother now. "What about then?" All of the emotions Salem had been living in, stewing in, for the past five months tried their hardest to push themselves into her words. She'd waited for this moment desperately, waiting to carry out justice against the homophobia she'd faced. Her mom left her for dead, she knew that much. Kicking her out with nothing but the clothes on her back...what did she expect? Stealing was the least she could do.
"Well..." She could see her mother's mouth moving, searching for words. "...you know, I wasn't gonna have no bull livin' with me."
"The money's gone." A smile flitted across Salem's face when she saw how her mother's face dropped. "Someone stole it."
"Of course, Ellie. You can't hold onto shit. That's why I never trusted you with the funds, you know. You're too immature--"
Salem cut her mother off with a right hook that sent her mother careening to the sand. When she examined her shaking hand, Salem saw that there was blood on it.
A sense of relief washed over her. She was done being manipulated, living through stories of the good old days when she didn't exist. Hearing about how great life was before she was born, as though it had been her fault there was no electricity and her dad left. That was all over: she was making her own stories now.
"How's that for bull?" Salem asked before walking away, spraying sand over her mother's unconscious body as she left.
