So I firmly believe death and rape are the two most overused plot devices to force development on a character, so I'm going to present you with a new list of things that can be used to promote development that do NOT include tearing your character to an irreparable mess  because, you know, there are other ways
 losing faith in their religion
 losing a friend
having a parent or child say something terribly mean to them
saying something they don't mean to someone they care for and regretting it
gaining an addiction that they can't kick
introduction to drug usage that has social or health repercussions
getting an injury that forces them to change their lifestyle
be diagnosed with an illness they don't really have
getting into an argument with a loved one
doing something to "prove a point" and immediately regretting it
finding a new home and soon missing their old one
commit to something (like a job) that they immediately regret
 underestimate someone and get defeated/"showed"
 be defeated in a competition
getting themselves in an embarrassing situation they can't get out of their mind
completely inaccurate self-diagnosis that leads to problems
completely accurate diagnosis that makes them think differently about themselves
try to learn a new skill and completely fail
go through a streak of doing bad at something they're usually great at
getting rejected by someone they really care for
basically convincing themselves of anything negative that isn't true
suffering an experience that makes them gain a fear of something very common
experiencing a situation that leads to low self-esteem
not being able to learn something no matter how hard they try
going through a series of misfortunes and getting all doom and gloom
going through a "lose-lose" situation and having to suffer a consequence
being haunted by a formerly repressed memory that's now very obvious
finding out something that makes them question their way of life
being taken advantage of by someone they care about
having to care for someone who's depressed or suicidal
being forced into making decisions they don't want to
being thrust into a situation they don't want to be in
being forced to spend time with someone they don't like
losing control over an aspect of their life they don't want to lose control over
suffer a demotion or loss of job
being forced to take another job that they have no interest in
being forced to fight a war they don't want to (for whatever reason)
dealing with a sick family member/friend who cannot be healed
