The sonorous blaring of a brass live band filled the room, muffled ever-so-slightly with the murmurings of a floor packed with party guests. If Teddy were to guess, there were a hundred new faces at least, all with the desire to satisfy those vices that seemed less like a necessity and more like an optional yearning in The New World. But here, in The Badlands’ casino, there was no such thing as a hierarchy of needs. Survival was secondary in a life where they could thrive with their sins freely.
The roulette wheels clicked eagerly, red and black rushing as one as drunken crowds gathered around different tables, gambling and betting with mixed drinks in their hands. Others were not shy to indulge in more self-willed activities, thin white lines across tables provided liberally by Badlanders themselves.
This evening would be like no other, a night of discounted buy-ins and a free glass of prosecco on the door. Guests revelled in the illusion that The Badlands was generously handing out their goods to let the good times roll, but a Badlander always had an ulterior motive. Teddy wanted to grin at the way they had enticed so many new Prospectives dying to make this town their new home. If only they knew that once they’d step foot in the door as an official Badlander, there was no escape.
Hell, every hundred clown who’d chosen to tempt fate and find their way in The Badlands would never leave again. Once they were hooked on something, whether that be the drugs or gambling, the intimacy of others or the seemingly perfect lives that the Badlanders would lead, there was always something which would eventually draw them back in to provide for The Badlands.
Teddy spent the majority of the evening, wearing the very best designer outfit that he owned as he wandered nonchalantly through the casino with a group of several others, commanding the group with nothing more than a captivating smile and a cigarette pinched between two fingers. ❝ Ya know, ❞ He began to speak to whoever was in the group accompanying him, brows raised before nodding his head towards the open doors that lead outside to a large terrace that looked out across the ocean. Crowds had already made their way down the stone steps down to the promenade to gather in anticipation for the evening’s fireworks show
❝ ask me what could get any better than this. ❞ He took a long puff of his cigarette, leaning on the stone balustrade to look down at the crowd forming as he slowly exhaled a plume of smoke into the crisp night sky. Then, two fingers that pinched his cigarette wagged towards his company, brows raising fervently as he then pointed out, ❝ Nothing. Nothing could be greater than this. ❞ Whilst he spoke, the song came to an end, the brass band silencing along with the crowd who looked out into the night sky keenly.
And then, a pop, followed by colours lighting up the dark sky. The fireworks were fantastic, whizzing and crackling through the air whilst the drunken crowd roared with excitement. Teddy stood proudly, shoulders rolled back and cigarette lodged between his lips as he applauded the display eagerly. Eyes alight with ambition, Teddy watched the way the guests fell deeper and deeper into The Administration’s trap.
