dahlia had gone to bed as usual, curled up in her bed with the light purple blanket that she had traded for when she had first got here wrapped around her. usually she could avoid thinking about her history and get a good night's sleep, but not tonight.
now it wasn't that her past was some edgy backstory full of woe and tragedy, just more like she had this one day that she couldn't forget. there had been far bloodied days, but it hadn't been her family's blood on the grass in those days. and there had been less pressure to get it fixed in a short amount of time. that was back when her uncle Harvey herded the goats.
as she drifted off, she snuggled deeper into the blanket. dahlia was scared of goats and although it seemed like a ridiculous fear, it was pretty well grounded.
it was dawn when her brother shook her awake. "come on dolly! I promised uncle Harvey that I'd come with him today and I figured you could look for some plants for mom or whatever you two huddle over every time some injured guy shows up at the house."
dahlia stretched and climbed out of the haytick bed that was on the left side of the room that she shared with her older brother,
she was eight and he was ten and yet he acted so much more mature. dahlia was fine with being a lot for a while longer. "yeah, okay. I'll just get ready and meet you outside." she had to admit that she was pretty excited to go because it would be her first chance to go out and forage without her mother breathing down her neck and plus Harvey was really funny and she liked hanging out with her father's younger brother quite a bit.
heading outside after she got dressed, the little girl smiled at the sunshine. it was a lovely day on the small hilltop that the elm village. following her brother, they headed for the meadow where the goats had their pen. Harvey was in charge of herding them and making sure nothing got in there and ate them, even though he was only seventeen. smiling at her uncle, she woukd leave her brother, oak, to talk to him and instead wandered towards some pretty purple flowers. they were thistles, she knew, but she still had a small soft spot for the weed. it was pretty. although not very useful, so she moved on. they were running low on lady ferns, so she headed for the forest edge to try and peep between the trees to check and see if she could spot any of the sensitive plant.
butcher happy day changed in an instant as she grabbed handfuls of the plant and was trekking back towards the entrance of the pen where she had left her herb bag, and turned around hearing a shrill whistle, the goats were running around frantically obviously dksconcerted by something. she didn't have time to figure out what before she realised that they were heading for her. dahlia froze,
she wasn't sure what to do. this was only her second time coming to see the goats and the last time they had just ate grass and done nothing else.
And suddenly she was thrown over the fence. landing on her butt, she stopped as she heard a snapping sound, a shout, and a bunch of terrified bleating. peering over the stone wall, she gasped. Harvey had thrown her over the wall and ended up getting trampled by the rather large and vast amount of goats. opening the gate and running back in, dahlia grabbed her bag.
this was the point where the dream changed from what actually happened. in reality, Harvey had just broken his arm and got a bruise from being stepped on the face, but in the long run was fine, but in the dream, whenever she ran around that gate, there was nothing but a broken body in a pool of blood.
jolting awake with loud gasp, dahlia immediately threw her blanket off of her and opened her door and headed for the infirmary. she was jittery right now and just needed some lavender or sage to calm her down. she woukd just sit down and smell the scent for a while and that always helped with anxiety or fear for others and had worked for her as long as she could remember. lighting a candle or however you turned on a light without electricity, she grabbed a clump of lavender and sage and set them on the table and took a deep breath. "speech"
