She was seventeen when she left Aravale, leaving behind her family, her friends, her life in favor of starting fresh somewhere new. Somewhere where things weren't easy. She wanted to truly earn her place, not be handed one on a silver platter because she'd been a close friend of the Queen. Well, Empress now.
Aenda had found what she was looking for in Ellywynn, with House Raegendyr. She'd become part of the guard fairly easily - there was nothing barring a woman from joining, though she suspected they made their standards for women higher than men - and from there it hadn't taken terribly long to start proving her worth and getting closer to the royal family.
She didn't like how she'd become a knight, as it had less to do with what she had done and more to do with what the knight guarding Nathan had done. Sure, Harold was well-aware of her and what she could do, which was why she was chosen to replace the knight, but she wished she would have been knighted in light of some great deed, not someone else fucking the prince.
She couldn't complain too much, though, she had the position she desired and the job was neither too cushy for her to be bored nor too taxing for her to grow tired of it. She'd become good friends with Nathan, and good friends with another man, Mathew. He was one of the only knights that seemed to approve of her being knighted and not irritated by her presence and proximity. She wasn't sure if it was the "foreign" part or the "woman" part that seeded their disapproval, but in either case she was eager to prove her worth and loyalty.
Did she miss the little cottage on a hill that gave way to a rocky beach? Of course she did, that place was home. She missed her parents and brother too, and Shaena. Sometimes she thought about what her life would be like if she'd stayed, though she tried not to think about it too much. She didn't like thinking about how she wouldn't get to watch her little brother finish growing up, or how she'd betrayed her best friend when she needed her most.
One perfect moment, then gone in the morning. If that wasn't the story of her life.
Now her days revolved around guarding Nathan, and his days revolved around politics and intrigue, fighting with his father and dodging princesses - including his sister. Even though he tried to avoid the girls his father had lined up, he still was trying to find someone. It was always hard to watch each person he found be ripped away from him, and as bad as she was with feelings, she always tried to be there for him. Maybe because there were times when she was his only ally in this, maybe because of the guilt she felt for abandoning Shaena.

sad romantic softie
He knew he had a pretty good life, and that there wasn't much he could complain about. He lived a life of luxury, never went hungry, had a loving family, high standing and a future as a king of one of the richest kingdoms. There were ladies throwing themselves at him left and right. If all he truly wanted was to find love, it shouldn't be that hard, should it?
Well, for one, he didn't think he'd find true love in a political marriage, and for two, women didn't hold the allure for him that men did. If he was anyone else, that wouldn't be a problem, almost everyone was accepting of gay people. But he was Nathan Raegendyr, Heir to the Crown of Ellywynn, and part of his responsibility would be producing an heir. He was certain that if he had a child (even a bastard one), his father would stop shoving ladies at him, as he'd said he didn't care that he was gay. Harold cared about continuing the line.
Of course, there was his younger sister Natalie. While Nathan would gladly forfeit his claim to the throne if it meant getting to fall in love, no one really thought it was a good idea for his sister to take the throne. She was obsessed with dark magic and necromancy and had half the kingdom convinced she was capable of it, though he knew better. Natalie didn't care about politics or running a kingdom, she cared about magic and tormenting those she disliked. Even she didn't really want to be queen, though sometimes he mood shifted and she did. In general though, she agreed with everyone else: she shouldn't have the crown. She might have children someday, but currently she was more interested in vexing boys rather than dating them.
So there was little for Nathan to complain about, but what there was to lament was what mattered to him. He wanted to find love and not have it ripped away for one reason or another. There'd only been a few guys he'd liked so far, well, there'd been several that he liked, but only a few returned his feelings. The first, Jonah, had been the knight assigned to him at the time, but once word of their tryst got out, Jonah had been sent somewhere else and was replaced with Aenda. The second, Vuri, had been an ambassador from Yudara, but had returned shortly after. Nathan wasn't sure if that was of his own accord or because of something in Yudara, or because Harold had demanded he leave. Then there was Randi, one of the apprentice cooks in the castle kitchen, who suddenly stopped working there a couple weeks into their relationship. His last lover was also the one that stuck around the longest, Zeke. Just like everyone else he'd vanished from Nathan's life, but unlike the others there'd been a breakup, the pain from which was only just beginning to subside.
He knew that his father was responsible for Jonah getting reassigned, had his suspicions about Vuri and especially Randi, but couldn't blame his father for what happened with Zeke. Sometimes he told himself that none of them were right for him and they needed to make way for The One, who he'd meet when the time was right, but other times it just felt like he was destined to be alone, that there was no one out there for him that could deal with all of the royal bullshit.
He didn't even have very many friends that could deal with the royal bullshit, unless they were part of it. The list oftentimes consisted of one name, Aenda. She was always there, always steady, and even if she wasn't very good at comforting him or dealing with his emotions in general, he was certain she wasn't going to disappear on him, even if for some reason Harold didn't want her around anymore. She was stubborn as a fucking mule. As far as other friends went, Pyre was still working on them.

Wym smoothed the front of his shirt, the intricate designs seeming to glow in the bright lights of the glittering ballroom. He stood to the side, watching noble couples dance and listening to the hauntingly unfamiliar Ellywynn music.
He'd been here for a total of three days, and he'd spent every waking moment with stars in his eyes. He'd never traveled out of the capital of Voln, much less to another country, but out of the blue he'd been plucked out and sent across the sea and now he was here, listening to beautiful music as he watched strangers dance and laugh and smile.
He knew he had a goofy grin stretched across his face, he knew he was out of place in his golden, draconian clothing, but he didn't care. This place felt more magical then Voln ever had, which was tough considering Ostaesia was one of the most magic-centric kingdoms in the world.
The music was buoyant and the people were warm and kind and it was so nice. It reminded him of the joyous Winter festivities that lasted throughout the cold months when the dragons stole food and the sun barely warmed the air. They strung lights between buildings above the streets and covered the main fountain with floating candles. It was always the best part of the year, and here in Ellywynn it felt like every day was filled with those festivities.
He was a little homesick though; he missed the Virtues - the women who raised him alongside the other orphans in Voln - and he missed his old room and his old routine. He'd never gotten an answer as to why he'd suddenly been thrown to the wolves like this, just a message from the King that he'd be going to Ellywynn's capital as an ambassador the next morning.
But he'd make the best of it, he always did. After all, Tiaphaig always had a plan for their disciples and he'd never been led astray before.

princess of ellywynn // monotone freak
She didn't belong anywhere. Not among the commoners, not among the nobles, not among the sorcerers. If she tried to live among the peasants, they'd see a princess. A very fucked up princess. That's what the nobles saw too, someone that despite being born on or above their level, she couldn't exist in their world, function in their way. And the sorcerers she so admired? Well, her powers weren't impressive enough to remove the barrier.
She knew she should be grateful to have powers at all as so few people were blessed with them, but her gifts felt more like a curse simply because they weren't what she dreamed of having. They were not dark, she couldn't hex people or raise the dead or summon demons. She could make plants grow. How boring, how useless.
Natalie's only consolation was that half the people thought she had dark magic, or was possessed. It was rather fun and self-satisfying to perpetuate the myth, and people tended to give her a wide berth because of it, which she liked. These people didn't understand her, nor did they care enough to try. All they knew was that she threatened to place a curse on the kingdom if someone placed a crown on her head (and that was just for fun) and that she was the deadpan girl that wandered the grounds in black dresses more fit for a widow.
And what else was there to know? She was strange and wore black and frequently vexed those she disliked. Well, her favorite books were on necromancy. She was an excellent chef but rarely got to share her talents with anyone but the kitchen staff, but they only pretended to eat her food for fear of poison. Which wasn't baseless, as she'd made comments about favoring poison as a way to kill people. She hates swimming and excessively spicy things. But all she was was a misfit in the eyes of her father's court.
All the kids her age seemed to be scared of her, but seeing as some of the adults were scared of her that wasn't too strange. Natalie might not like being around people too much, especially normal ones who thought only of money and power, and refused to see the world outside of themselves. Sure, some may examine the politics of other nations, but only to see how it would effect them or their allies, or to appear well-informed in conversation.
It did get lonely, though, and she'd be lying if she said she didn't long for the companionship of someone else. Not someone annoying, like Edward, who was one of the only people that could stand her. Someone who shared her interests and morbidity. Someone who wasn't just trying to get something from her, as Edward surely was. But until she found such a person (if they even existed), she was content to remain the friendless terror of Ellywynn.

Azer found himself in Ellywynn, as one typically did when your king ordered you on a surprise diplomatic mission. Azer had packed up his measly belongings and hopped aboard the first boat leaving to Ellywynn and had been accepted into the court graciously when he arrived.
He knew he got quite a few looks from the nobles; he'd always been told he was unnerving, by the way he drawled his words in his thick Ostaesian accent like he owned wherever he stepped and by the flint-like coldness of his eyes.
Azer didn't quite care about any of that, he'd always been a loner at heart, even back in his own country. He'd gotten the nickname Wolf from many, many years on the streets. He'd never known luxury or true kindness after having been promptly abandoned at birth and left to fend on his own.
And Ellywynn was simply a continuation of that. Only now he had to play nice with their nobles and royalty and he got stared at all the time and he just-
He didn't care about any of it. He didn't care.
He continued not caring even when he noticed the Prince trying to not get caught staring. He continued not caring when he eventually manned up and invited Nathan to walk with him through the gardens during one lonely afternoon. He continued not caring even when he heard nobles talking behind his back like he was deaf.
He kept not caring when Nathan finally kissed him. He kept not caring when the King confronted him and tried to bully him back to Ostaesia.
He desperately wanted to not care, but who the fuck was he fooling?
He couldn't help but grin with smugness when he watched Aenda defeat two guards at the same time in a sparring match. He couldn't help but relax when Nathan rested against his shoulder. He couldn't help but softly tell Nathan his real name, late at night.
And then the visit to Ostaesia came. And then it was revealed that he was the firstborn Prince. And then it was revealed that his own fucking mother tried to kill him. That he'd been stripped of his right to the crown, his right to a good childhood and a family. That he'd been cursed and abandoned.
And he didn't care.
And he didn't care.
And he cared.
Segarus and Elsie welcomed him with open arms. His parents... Didn't. They were distant, but whereas Roheis was scathing and cruel, Randolph was quiet and avoided his son at all costs. Both hurt in different ways, but it boiled down to something Azer had known for his entire life; he was a mistake, and his parents didn't want him.
It only took two weeks in Ostaesia for him to beg Nathan to bring them home. He didn't want his blood, he wanted his home and his home was in Ellywynn. He wanted to sit on the railing of Nathan's balcony and watch the stars. He wanted to ruffle Natalie's hair and give her pointers for her black magic. He wanted to dress in the fanciest bullshit he could find and dance with Nathan in the middle of the ballroom.
The weight of magic pressing down on his soul, the sound of waves crashing against the rocks, the low roar of a dragon hunting in the distance; it was all familiar but it wasn't right.
Ellywynn was where he belonged, as strange as that thought was.

It wasn't the kindest thing, to be plucked from her cozy place in Voln where she'd been training to become a Virtue, but she knew better then to object to the King's direct orders. So she boarded a ship heading for Ellywynn and found herself welcomed into their royal court.
She tried her best to enjoy her time there, even though being ripped from her homeland felt like a cruel joke the universe was playing on her. Virtues never left Ostaesia during their training. Tiaphaig would surely never accept her now that she'd been tainted with Ellywynn's lifestyle.
But still, she tried. She tried to enjoy the Princess's cruel magical pranks, she tried to enjoy the dismissive nature of the people around the castle, she tried to enjoy the politics of the court. She tried to be nice as the King practically shoved his son onto her.
She found Nathan charming, but she wasn't interested in him. She liked him as a friend, and she'd even bail him and his any of his lovers' out of bad situations whenever she got the chance. She liked his bodyguard, Aenda, plenty, even if she wasn't the friendliest face and was often quite meanspirited.
And eventually she carved out a life for herself that wasn't horrible.
But the trip back to Ostaesia.. Gods, she'd waited so long to go back. Even if it was for a little while, just for a diplomatic mission, she desperately wanted to go. Nathan obliged her - he could never say no to her - and they set off to Ostaesia.
Everything.. Moved a bit quickly after that.
She lost her place as a Virtue-in-training, but found her bloodline as a Princess. The firstborn, actually, so she had full rights to the throne. Was it even a choice? Even with Roheis breathing down her neck, it'd take a miracle to tear her off the throne now.
This was her place, with her two younger brothers - Segarus, her gentle middle brother and Iames her troubled youngest - and even if her parents didn't care for her, she wasn't planning on running away.
Ostaesia was her home and she planned on keeping it.
