ok I am no closer to coming up with rank names so here's what we've got so far
RANKS:
Leader, undecided name, same as Top Dog rank
Deputy, undecided name, same as Proxy rank
HP, undecided name, sameish as Council rank, will maybe serve a slightly different function
S/HP, undecided name, not really the same as War Chief/Head Hunter/Chamber but is the equivalent rank*
Member, undecided name, same as Grunt rank
Prisoner, undecided name, same as Worm rank
TITLES:
Branded, marked with an elaborate BL brand, is the most honorable title that can be given. It only goes to those that exemplify what it means to a Badlander. They must have spilled blood and bled on behalf of the Badlands and have proven their loyalty beyond a shadow of a doubt. It doesn't really give excess authority, but it does come with a great deal of status and anyone caught disrespecting the Branded may have to face minor consequences.
Enforcer, may be a rank instead but will likely be a title. Marked with,,, SOMETHING, it is a title given to those the leader trusts to enforce their rule and will have the authority to do so. May often be considered among the leader's favorite Badlanders, preferred second only to the Branded.
Medic, marked by a white band worn on the forearm, it is a title given to those that have proven themself as a capable healer and has the authority to take care of the wounded and ill of the Badlands. When acting as a healer they can issue orders relating to their task (such as getting someone to fetch supplies or clear an area).
Raider, marked by SOMETHING (ooh maybe certain piercings or something?), it is a title given to those that have participated in several raids and led at least one.
(and possibly more if you guys have suggestions throw em at me)
The goal of making titles the bigger thing as opposed to ranks is to drive story rather than activity, in the hopes that enough story will spawn activity. Those that are given a title for their character's ic action won't have to worry about losing it unless their character performs a different ic action that warrants getting stripped of said title. Things to gain titles can be plotted out ahead of time, however the plots must happen ic (some leniency can be granted here and there, but no one can say "this happened so can my character get __ title" without there being some ic thing marking that it actually happened. Consistent activity is only required of HPs and those looking to climb the ranks, but there are several other ways that members can gain status and recognition in the Badlands without needing to constantly post.
* after all this struggling, I'm thinking the main thing will just be merging the s/hp ranks and not really. changing rank names or responsibilities beyond that. I was talking to Aj and Beatles about it and we're all feeling a very raider-y/rebel-y (possibly slightly cultish) vibe, but for the life of me I can't think of any ranks that really. fit that that I like (I'm taking suggestions ofc) but I may just. more or less stick w what we got for rn
