I Didn’t Want Us To Burn Out *Private*

Sherlock flinched a bit, but didn’t pull away. He kept his gaze down. “...About what?” Sherlock asked, his voice barely above a whisper and shaking.

he nodded. "how about that case we had last week, hm? the one you got really excited about? i'm sure your mom would love to hear it.." he said softly.

Sherlock blinked, he kept close to John. “Talking about it would take a long time. It was a rather long case.” He nurmjred

he nodded. "i know. that's why i want you to talk about it." he said gently.

He blinked before nodding. He shifted a bit. “Well, Lestrade came to me when the owner of Knightsbridge Chinese restaurant was found dead. He had been eating a plate of noodles at the time. At first glance it appeared to be an accident. However, Terry Wong, the owner who had died, he had bruising on his face which suggested that he had been attacked on the evening of his death.” Sherlock murmured.

“Now the interesting part is that Terry had never been alone that night. Staff and costumers had all confirmed he had been surrounded by people. But the killer needed two things. Opportunity and motive. At first there didn’t seem to be any open opportunity so we moved onto motive. Who wanted Terry dead and why?

And the answer, it seemed, was most of London! He'd not been a nice bloke, by all accounts, so plenty of people might have had a motive but there was simply no way for any person to have attacked him that night without anyone else seeing. And so we were straight back to opportunity.

The police coroner confirmed that Wong had died at around midnight so we spoke to everyone who had been in the restaurant in the hour leading up to his death. There'd been nine customers, two waiters and two kitchen staff. Each of them confirmed that Wong had been alive at the time they left the restaurant. And every single one of them denied seeing anyone attack him. Nearby CCTV confirmed the times that each customer and member of staff said they left the restaurant - each of them leaving between 11pm and just after midnight. And nobody else seems to have gone near the restaurant at any point after that.

I worked it out by breaking it down into the simplest facts:
a) Terry Wong was murdered at around midnight.
b) Nobody in the restaurant had seen anything.
c) Therefore some or ALL of them were lying.

They'd all done it! The customers and staff, all apparently random people, each had a motive for killing Wong. I had found online how they were all connected. An ex-member of staff had tweeted about how Wong had unfairly sacked him. Someone had replied saying that he'd been attacked by Wong years earlier. Someone else had replied... and so on and so on. A group of seemingly random people, all connected online.

There was no proof, of course. No taped meetings where they planned and plotted. And, after reading about some of the things Wong had done, I was quite happy to let it go. I was actually impressed by what they'd pulled off.”

he played with sherlocks hair. "and you solved it, didn't you?"

Sherlock blinked. “Yes, I did. Sadly there was no proof so we couldn’t bring the people in for justice.” He said. He then glanced down. Mary blinked.

“Well at least you figured it out, dear. That was very impressive.” She murmured.

he nodded. "very impressive." he said softly and kissed his head.

Sherlock closed his eyes. "You always say that." He murmured softly.
