Whilst the vulnerable people of Flintlock Lodge were temporarily residing in Northstar District and so stock was dwindling less than earlier years, Edmund was still well aware that they’d barely make ends meet by the time the snow and ice-bound surroundings melted away for the spring.

And so, a small group of Flintlockers set off in the early hours of the morning on a hunting trip, hunting bows at hand and off with a good lead following deer tracks in the fresh powder snow. Brothers Edmund and Thomas trudged quietly beside one another, Eddie’s head lowered as he searched for the deer tracks whilst Tom searched up ahead for any sign of their prey.

Several minutes later, Tommy slowed the group to a stop, slowly pointing to a small clearing in the forest where a lone buck grazed. Next, he looked towards Eddie, giving him a small nod to urge him to set up for his shot. Eddie would say nothing, instead crouching down further ahead as he prepared the arrow for his shot. He knelt down, a twig snapping from the weight of his knee, before the buck lifted it’s head. Alerted, it didn’t take long before the buck darted away into the forest.

❝ Fuck’s sake, Eddie. ❞ Tom grumbled, rising from where he’d been crouched down himself, before looking over towards the small group of those who came along for the hunting trip. ❝ Someone else take Eddie’s place for him. Fire the shot when we find that little man again. ❞ He ordered before swivelling around to look towards Eddie. Eddie’s nostrils flared with a stressed exhalation, slowly pushing himself back up onto his feet before walking back over towards the group and holding out the bow and arrow quivers for somebody else to take.

Clearly, he was losing his touch, and that was driving Eddie mad

the winter seasons were never easy around flintlock. sometimes fred wondered whether it was worth it to live in such a place. then again, with the winter storms, it also meant that less people were tempted to try and attack the group again. the imminent war made the silence around the place often unbearable, freddie’s fingertips aching to stab a man or two -- but, in the end, he figured that the bloodshed would be worth the ominous wait.

if he didn’t starve to death first.

he overdramatically cringed as he watched the alerted buch flee from the scene. shit. what happened to sharpshooter eddie? perhaps now was as good a time as any to try and rechallenge him to a game of archery… fred hardly managed to bite his tongue as tommy walked towards eddie. turning towards the group to ask for someone to take eddie’s place.

freddie grinned at the horribly good situation he’d found himself in, smug eyes practically gleaming as he stepped towards eddie’s outstretched hand. oh, this felt too good. “with that performance, i would think that you want us all to starve, eddie. here,” a cocky smirk made its way to his lips, too pleased with eddie’s fumble to try and conceal his delight as he held out his hand. wanting eddie to place the bow and arrow quivers in his hands. “let me show you how it’s done.”

That buck could have fed the entire lodge sufficient protein for tonight's dinner if Eddie's shaking hands and lack of concentration didn't steer their game away. Tommy was clearly disappointed, probably because this was no environment to spend the entire day in if they could help it. The cold was biting at their skin, and staying outdoors for too long was enough to make anyone's body tremble mercilessly from the sheer cold.

Freddie was the one to smugly pipe up with an offer to take Eddie's place. Of course he'd wish to try turn this into a challenge; who would be successful in bringing a meal home today? Who was the better hunter? ❝ Let me show you how it's done. ❞ Freddie pointed out cockily, enough to instantly dampen Eddie's already-miserable mood. A part of him wished to bitterly refuse to hand Feddie the bow and arrow, but Eddie wasn't here to play those sorts of playground games. Ultimately, they needed somebody skilled enough to bring home a satisfying meal and clearly Eddie would not be that man today.

Wordlessly, jaw clenched and eyes piecing as he watched Freddie, Ed eventually caved, handing the bow and arrow quivers over to Freddie. ❝ Don't go letting us down now, Freddie. ❞ It was all he'd say before heading to the back of the group so that he could trail behind them with his head down and hands deep in his pockets. Tommy sighed, tipping his head to look at the sky before looking at Freddie. ❝ Let's see what y'got then, huh. ❞
