[b]"Can you please just give me a ride to school? I don't wanna fill gas yet." She rapped her fingers gently against the rusty red truck, pulling on her best, most pitiful look as her neighbour exited his house. She could see the exasperation on his face as she swallowed back the giggle threatening to escape her lips. In all seriousness, she did pull this stunt more often than she should, though he never really did say no, either. Truth is, the two of them strived to be as irksome as possible towards one another. Little things, like incessantly blowing up each other's phones or, like today, hitching rides. One of Bambi's favourite things. Though she [i]could drive to school on her own, why would she when she could just use up someone else's gas?

"It's in the opposite direction, Bams, no way," Kieran snorted, slinging his jacket into the backseat of the car before sliding into the driver side. Bambi did what any other good friend would do, climb into the passenger side, of course. She couldn't just let him venture out alone. Besides, she had to get to school as well and it would only be a matter of time before he cracked and drove her there. He always had her back, even despite them getting on each other's nerves more often than not.

"Yes way 'cause I'm your best friend and also your neighbour, so I'll just tell your mom that you're being mean," She teased, securing her seatbelt in place and offering the brunette beside her a cheeky smile. He returned her smile with an eye roll, though pulled out of the driveway anyway and they were off. As close as they were, she couldn't deny that she still felt a gentle sigh of relief from his acceptance. They didn't spend nearly as much time together, especially not with her transferring schools.

There was a lingering divide between them now, even sitting in the same car. The two of them looked like polar opposites; she was cleanly pressed, a molded version of herself in a school uniform and Kieran in the laziest outfit Bambi had seen to date. She missed being able to chuck on a hoodie (her colour of choice) and duck into school, but at West Moores, she was expected to be uniform at all times. Not only in uniform, but it had to be 'orderly', meaning every button buttoned, shirts tucked, and skirts at the right length. In other words, uptight. The atmosphere at West Moores was suffocating, and yet Bambi would do anything for her family.

The drive wasn't all too long, and before she knew it, she was slamming the car door shut and sparring a wave to Kieran's disappearing truck. An extremely clunky and ugly car amongst shiny, foreign cars. Right, she would never fit in. Not when everyone around her spent weekends at yacht clubs or whatever, and she found the greatest joy by beating her siblings in a couple rounds of Wii games.

The scholarship was a huge opportunity, one that she couldn't pass up, according to her parents. And so she didn't, on their accord. They wanted the best for her, and if the best meant transferring school starting junior year, so be it. Private schools were a scary thing, in Bambi's eyes. Full of wealth and judgement, she couldn't deny that she was the outcast. She didn't come from money, and she didn't come from status. She was just Bambi, no status and no wealth. A complete waste of time and money, in the eyes of her new peers, she supposed.

Though only about a week into junior year, Bambi was exhausted. Not that she'd ever say anything about it. Instead, she took her time getting to chemistry, even after the bell had rung. She didn't care anymore, really. These weren't her peers, these were barely her classes. She wasn't exactly sure how she was going to last another two years of all of this.

"Ms. Chau, how nice of you to join us. Have a seat, we're going over the details of the assignment." She did like her new chemistry teacher though. A kind woman who helped Bambi out since day one. Also, she never said much about her tardiness, only brushed it off to continue with lectures. With that, she quickly made her way to the back of the classroom, sliding her backpack onto the floor before taking her seat.

"Right, back to the topic. So West Moores will be hosting the annual science fair next month, and what that means for you all, is that I expect participation. The subject and experiment will be up to you, and I will be assigning partners for this project. I figured it would be good to split you guys up and force you to get to know each other," She spoke with a knowing smile as the class erupted into soft whispers of complaints. Great, Bambi already knew what that meant. She had planned on spending the entire year choosing to work alone, but it didn't seem like much of an option anymore.

"As your name gets called, come pick up a packet and then feel free to disperse throughout the classroom or the hallway in order to start planning." Bambi tuned in as the teacher, Mrs. Haysworth, began prattling off names on her list. Pausing every now and then to allow kids to grab their things, the packet, and leave. It was nearing the end before Bambi began growing a bit nervous. She could only hope her partner wasn't either totally boring or totally a prick.

"Linh, Beckett, come grab your papers." Bambi took her time gathering her things, though quickly grabbed the packet off of the counter before ducking out of the classroom, awaiting for her new partner to join her. God, this was going to be a long month, she could already feel it in her bones.

[i]"Beckett, I swear to God! If you don't get your ass down here, I'm leaving without you," he heard the familiar shrill voice of his twin sister from downstairs. It was the same every morning. Bonnie would just yell at him to hurry up so they wouldn't be late. Every time she would threaten him with leaving but she never did. Their moms would ground her for leaving him behind. Of course, Beckett definitely would, one hundred percent, leave her behind without a second thought. Sure, he'd get yelled at. Did he really care? No. It wasn't going to happen anyways because she was already ready before him. He wouldn't have the chance to do it if he tried.

Sometimes, he wanted to not get out of bed and not go to school because it was annoying. Private schools are so annoying. they are expensive and you have to wear a stupid uniform, but he dealt. West Moores was a school where you couldn't be lax with your grades and attendance. If you didn't attend, you were basically screwed. That was, if you didn't have an excuse. If you skipped, it was inevitable that your parents would be called but that didn't really scare Beck. Of course, he should be grateful that he got to even attend the school. His moms were paying a lot of money for him and Bonnie to be there.

He grabbed his backpack from beside his desk after tying his shoes and shut the light to his room off. [b]"Jesus, Bonnie. We don't always have to be thirty minutes early. Calm down." The shorter of the twins frowned and Beck just grinned and ruffled her hair before grabbing the keys off the counter as well as an apple. He wasn't one to eat breakfast but his moms always scolded him when he didn't eat something. Knowing Bonnie, she'd rat him out just to cause some problems. So, as he walked towards the door, he finished the piece of fruit and threw the core away. He looked back at her for a brief moment, "you coming Bon Bon?" He said that with a smirk, knowing how much she hated that nickname.

The ride was filled with sibling banter between the two - which was basically a minute by minute with the LaChapelle twins. Of course, it was all in good fun. At the end of the day, they would hug it out and reassure the other that they stilled loved them. It only lasted for about twenty minutes, given the bit of distance that they lived from West Moores. Nevertheless, it kept going up until the were there.

Beck checked the time when they got there, and they were earlier. Of course, they weren't thirty minutes early like he knew Bonnie wanted to be, but only about five minutes. He rolled his eyes at the fact and looked down at Bonnie once they were out of the car. "Are you happy we're here early Bon?" His tone of voice carried sarcasm, which was almost his consistent tone of voice since about a month ago. He caught her eye roll and chuckled a little bit at her annoyance with him before parting ways with her to go to class. The school seemed to want to keep them as separate as possible, so they only had one out of seven classes together. Maybe they had figured out that whenever the LaChapelle twins were together, there was always trouble. So, they decided best to keep the two of them separated since the last year.

He entered the classroom two minutes before it was supposed to start and already he saw unfamiliar faces and was reminded with the fact that they had a surge of new kids. Scholarship kids from public schools in the area. There was a clear separation between the two sides, sort of like the two gangs in West Side Story. Beck definitely wasn't going to bridge that gap because he was annoyed that these new people were here. It had been a little over a week and it still annoyed him, it still annoyed everyone. The adjustment period was definitely not over. With a roll of his eyes, he walked towards the familiar faces, one of which was his best friend and his girlfriend.

Beck sat beside Ellie and pressed a quick kiss to her cheek, knowing that their chemistry teacher would chastise them. It happened far too many times last year and just in the first week of school. He normally didn't care but she was a lot more uptight about it in his opinion. Either way, he had his arm around her and whispered a soft 'I love you' to her before class officially started and they had to actually be quiet.

Mrs. Haysworth was a nice teacher, honestly, but he wasn't really interest in science. It was complicated and there were too many theories and complicated math things that he just would zone out for and it was only the second week. He was surprised to hear her talking about some project that could have any science-related topic. He looked over at his friends who were rolling their eyes at the thought of doing this, most probably wouldn't even put in much effort.

Then the door opened and in walked a girl he had seen maybe once and he just laughed a bit to himself. He thought it typical of one of these "new kids" to be late, probably weren't used to being on time. His gaze moved away from her and back to the front, listening to the details of the project, zoning out knowing that they'd get a rubric or assignment sheet. Then, Haysworth brought up that she was going to be pairing them. That immediately caught his attention when she followed it with that they'd be split up and paired with someone they didn't know. That was just fantastic, so fantastic!

He felt more annoyed than when he walked in less than ten minutes okay. "Is she seriously going to make us work with them? This is stupid." Beck looked at Ellie, who had said that. She looked incredibly upset, probably expecting that she and him would work together like everyone assumed they'd just get to choose as most group projects went at West Moores. She was just trying to be more progressive.

She started listing off pairs of partners and Beck watched as people slowly started trickling out to meet their partners. He saw the incredulous look on Ellie's face when she heard her name and he glanced at the person she was paired with. He was some scrawny-looking kid with thick-rimmed glasses and cuffed jeans and black converse. It took all his self-control not to laugh about it.

"Linh, Beckett, come grab your papers." His eyebrows raised when he heard his name and silently groaned as he shoved his stuff in his bag. The girl who walked up was the same girl who was late. He sighed and slowly followed after, taking his time. She had already grabbed the packet and her body language read upset or annoyed.

Beck stopped in front of her and gave her a glance over, sizing up who he was working with. "You must be Linh, I'm Beckett." He rarely used his full first name, always introducing himself as Beck. His voice was annoyed and he hoped that she realized that he was just as unhappy about this as she was.

"So, what are we supposed to do for this stupid assignment?"

Bambi would never be able to understand the appeal of assigning partners. Why was that a thing all teachers did at least once or twice? Sure, it may have encouraged conversation between classmates during the project, but did teachers expect them all to continue talking to each other afterwards? That definitely wasn't happening. It was more likely that they'd speak the bare minimum to one another in order to get it over with. After all, forced conversations had to be some of the worst. At least in her own opinion.

As her partner sidled out of the room, she could already feel the irritation radiating off of him. While Bambi didn't exactly feel welcome, she was sure she wasn't giving off the best vibe either. Though the first thing she truly did notice was his height. He was tall, decently ( [i]actually, quite ) attractive. And yet she had a feeling that that didn't stand true for personality. If worse came to worst, she could probably kick his ass despite the height difference. That's what backup was for anyway.

The next thing she noticed was their stuffy uniforms. Everyone looked just as stiff and uncomfortable in their clothes as the next person, and that was at least enough to keep her content. Many of them had probably been wearing the school outfits for a while, but there was no way for any of them to look normal without losing the blazer and the tie. And basically every other part of said uniform.

[b]"No clue, I wasn't there for half of the details," she responded breezily, sparing a quick glance over the packet she had grabbed, "It's for the science fair or something, though." While it was one of the most dry subjects there was in her opinion, Bambi could do science. Science was a breeze, things made sense and they clicked. All cycles had an order, all living things had systems, and every cog fit into one another as it should. Science was explainable, and at least they had the freedom in choosing an experiment. For all she knew, they could make a volcano and call it a day, if Beckett was really awful at being a partner.

Even worse, they could do the whole soap, milk, and food dye trick. In the end, they just needed something to turn in by the end of the month.

"I think it's pretty free range, anything's on the table, if you got any bright ideas." She passed the packet over to the other, finally taking a moment to scope out the other pairings. Everyone looked just as awkward, if not annoyed, as the other. It was all to be expected, none of them were used to the change. The scholarship kids weren't happy with how snobbish things were, and the preppy kids weren't happy with how unsnobbish the newcomers were. Bambi was no exception to either; either scrutinizing or under scrutiny, there wasn't much difference.

"We also need to figure out when we're working on this. You don't look that happy to be around me, and trust me, I can say just the same," She spoke quickly, arms folded tightly across her chest, "And if we're gonna have to 'get along' for a month, at least call me Bambi. I never go really by Linh." She explained finally, hesitating for a moment. It would've bugged her to no end if she was called Linh for the rest of the month by a classmate. It took her another moment before offering out her hand in some semblance of peace.

A handshake. Neutral enough, right? Not as intimate as a hug, yet still not as cold as nothing offered. So while handshakes were weird amongst them ( really, what was the point? ), it was really more for herself. A way to promise herself to actually attempt to be civil and nice and quickly get this assignment over with.

[align=center]This was all an odd turn of events, really.
She wasn't expecting this to happen, it really wasn't [i]supposed to happen. They were only meant to get along for the project. They were going to complete it together, with as minimal contact as possible, and then go their separate ways. Beckett was meant to be just another one of West Moores' typical idiotic preps. A carbon copy of his best mates and the rest of the student population at the school. And yet, somewhere along the way, he became a little less stereotypical asshole, and more like... a good friend? In other words, somewhere along the way, Bambi actually began liking their meet ups. She liked spending time together, at first, working solely on the projects, and then, turning into the occasional pizza orders and casual discussions, and even that quickly turned into Mario Kart wars and long talks at their local diner over some fries.

And now, with the project out of the way, there were no excuses to meet up anymore. Bambi didn't have a reason to invite him over or out anywhere, and she especially didn't have an excuse to talk to him in school anymore. They texted pretty often, sure, but it wasn't the same as talking face to face. It was dumb, really. She could just invite him to hang out, no real reason, no bullshit. Yet, at the same time, she couldn't very well just invite him out. They weren't exactly friends, were they? Neither of them exactly liked each other, at least not in the beginning. Bambi liked him now, sure, but did he like her? What if he still only thought of her as a mooching scholarship kid? Their friendship could very well be only in her head, for all she knew, and that notion terrified her.

Not only that, but Beckett was in a completely different world. She couldn't blame him if he still thought of her as a waste of school resources (rude and all, sure, but if that was his thought then so be it.), after all, she didn't have wealthy parents. She didn't have a brand new car, or new shoes every week, she barely had enough money for gas sometimes. Her parents weren't oil tycoons or CEOs of major corporations, and her siblings weren't on the front page of any magazines or tabloids. She wasn't wealthy, or famous, or some crazy genius. No, she was just Bambi: "the Scholarship Kid." Smart enough for a scholarship to the school, at least. Even though it was also partially due to the fact that their school practically collapsed on itself and Bambi - along with some of her peers - needed a school to attend as quickly as possible.

So no, she probably wasn't at the same level as Beckett and the rest of the school, but she could've sworn that they had a lot of fun racing against her younger siblings in Mario Kart, and shooting their straw wrappers at each other at the diner. And she missed that. She missed Beckett, even if she struggled to admit it to herself from time to time. And she liked him. A lot more than she was going to be willing to admit any time soon, that was certain. Besides, that was a completely new set of problems that Bambi wasn't prepared to face quite yet. For now, she just wanted a reason for them to talk and hangout again. At least, until she could fully figure out whether or not it was okay to just ask him outright without an excuse.

She nearly jumped as her phone buzzed in her pocket, her eyes darting up to her English teacher quickly in hopes that she hadn't just heard it as well. Luckily, it didn't seem to be the case, what with her continuing to drone on about whatever they were reading, "Wuthering Heights," maybe. She took a moment before sliding her phone out of her pocket, quickly checking the text message.

Am I picking u up today too?

She paused for a moment, re-reading the question once more. It was yet another one of those days that she managed to get Kieran to drive her to school, he also normally drove her home as well. She didn't have a car on her, after all, and it wasn't like she was good enough friends with anyone to ask for a ride home. Except Beckett, of course, when they were working on the project, he normally ended up driving them either to hers, or to his. Which meant Kieran sometimes ended up in West Moores' parking lot for absolutely no reason, and Bambi was already long gone. Him asking her whether or not she needed a ride was now a part of their routine, except, unlike before, it was usually pointless now. She almost always answered with a yes. But maybe this time, she could use it to her advantage.

She took a moment, hesitating on whether or not she should even send the message. Sure, it was a blatant lie and all, but she was pretty desperate at this point. Either way, it wasn't like either Kieran or Beckett were going to discuss the situation with each other. Bambi was the only who knew, and it was a small white lie for a good reason. How bad was it going to be, unless Beckett said no to giving her a ride home? Even that wasn't bad, either. She did it, she sent it. And then quickly followed it up.

With her messages to Beckett sent, she quickly returned to her chat with Kieran as the teacher began handing back their tests. She already saw her grade online, of course, a solid A, though she was still hoping for some comments and feedback on her writing. That was always the "exciting" part, really. She couldn't help it, she liked the praises of her hard work from time to time.

He missed her.

That was a stupid and broad statement. That could be about any girl, but Beckett meant Bambi, the girl he had been paired with on a project. The girl that was at this school based only on the fact that she was a scholarship kid. He despised her. Well, of course, not anymore, right? Did he like her? That was what was confusing him. There has been a clear divide between the kids who were at the school because their parents paid or whatever, aka, his moms. Of course, that divide was still very clear and there was a "line" that you weren't supposed to cross. He couldn't help but miss her, though. After a while of working on that damn project, they had warmed up to each other, [i]got along, which Beckett never thought possible.

Of course, Bonnie had mocked him about it and still continued to. Maybe it was twin intuition. She could just tell he missed hanging out was Bambi. They always had fun doing things completely outside of the project. Video games, going to one of the local diners for food. It was like they could completely forget they came from two different worlds. It was nice. Almost felt like she saw him as more than just one of the other snooty rich kids. But did she really? He wasn't sure about that question but some feeling in him hoped that she did. But, what did this all mean? He couldn't really answer that question for some reason - at least, not with a definite answer. He wanted to spend time with her. Did that mean he wanted to be her friend? That's what baffled him. He wasn't supposed to want that, or anything to do with her for that matter. They were supposed to have gone their separate ways. Somehow, he knew that it felt wrong to do that.

In the midst of all these confusing feelings, they still managed to talk often. Not in person, over text. It was something right? Even if she didn't want to actually be his friend, at least she still talked to him. Was there even a point to talking if they never hung out anymore? Of course, he didn't want to not text her. He enjoyed talking to her. It was a breath of fresh air amongst the preppy, snooty classmates he had grown with since he started at West Moores. Beckett had often made excuses back during the project to get out of hanging with the "friends" and even his own girlfriend, which, that was going downhill and he knew it, yet hadn't broken up with her. It was still a form of status because she was very popular. Ellie got jealous easily, though. Always glaring at him when he talked to other girls, getting really upset when he'd have to cancel plans to "work on the project." Still, he stayed.

But, somewhere in the back of his mind, he sensed that maybe that would change. Maybe soon. Hopefully soon.

Beckett just hated this distance he had with Bambi. It felt forced but at the same time not, like they both knew they couldn't continue because they no longer had an excuse. Did they really need one though? That seemed really unfair, especially when it felt like they had connected on a deeper level than just project partners. He enjoyed hanging out with her and her sisters. Jokingly teasing her about something, mostly her inability to drive. That always humored him the most because he had to always drive her when they either hung out or worked on the project, unless they walked. Neither of them really wanted to do that, though.

He was sitting in his math class, not even paying attention. If he really needed help, he'd ask Bonnie, but that wasn't really necessary. Beckett didn't really pay attention in math because it was a breeze for him, the one class he didn't struggle really. The teacher was really boring and spoke in a monotone voice. Then, he felt a familiar buzz in his pocket and sat up a little more. With a quick glance up, seeing that the teacher had his back turned, writing something on the whiteboard, he took out his phone to see who was texting him.

[b]From: Bambi
[align=center]so K can't pick me up today

sent: 13:15

He stared at the message for a moment, wondering how to reply. He should say yes right? He wanted to hang out with her and this was his chance to do so. This was an opportunity out of nowhere. But, before he got the chance to reply, another text popped up from her.

From: Bambi
and pizza n milkshakes as bribes so pls say yes 0Smile
sent: 13:16

Beckett took another moment to think if he was supposed to do anything, give anyone a ride. The answer was no except for Bonnie but that was a given. Ellie was sick, so she cancelled their date. Maybe, he should stop by, be a good boyfriend. Yet, he wasn't going to, he'd say he had homework. That wasn't a lie, but an excuse to get out of it. Plus, he didn't want to get whatever she had. So, she couldn't really blame him. As long as she didn't know he was hanging out with Bambi, it wouldn't be an issue. Beckett supposed he should text Bonnie first, make sure she was okay with it. Well, she would be. There wasn't a point to text her, really.

To: Bambi
yeah, sure. bonnie is gonna be with me if that's okay with you tho? i could always see if she could get a different ride if not
sent: 13:22

There, he did it. They were, hopefully, hanging out. It would be a real chance to catch up and talk in person. He appreciated this spontaneous opportunity. Like, it felt as though life was like "you wanna hang out, here's your chance." Maybe they'd actually get back to the point of consistently hanging out. Beckett knew he shouldn't get his hopes up though, that was silly and normally set people up for failure. Still, he couldn't help it.

Her feedback wasn't anything exciting, really. She was hoping for some new revelations and ideas, or at least a couple of decent praises, but it was really nothing more than a 'Nice Job!' in a barely legible resemblance of cursive. It was honestly more disappointing than anything else, and Bambi ended up shoving the paper into her folder. It was a common occurrence to not receive any more than a single, impersonal praise, but it still felt like a cop out whenever she did receive one like so. It always made her wonder if her teacher even actually read her entire essay, or if she really just quickly skimmed through it and slapped a good grade on it. Not that she was ungrateful for the A of course, she'd rather have an A and no feedback than a C or a D with copious amounts of feedback.

Her phone lit up with a message from just the person she was waiting for, and upon receiving the green light, the debacle of praises and comments quickly flew out the window. She couldn't help the brief smile that flitted across her face as she read the message, unable to hide the excitement on her face for a quick moment. She took a moment to regain her composure before texting Kieran that she had a ride before sending Beckett a thumbs up emoji to signal that it was completely fine that Bonnie would tag along. She liked to think that she became pretty good friends with Bonnie as well during the time span. The three of them hung out on more occasions than one and it was always a good time, and Bambi honestly really enjoyed the Lachapelle twins' company.

&  &  &

With her last class of the day finished, she decided to wait on the two by the front entrance of the building, casually scrolling through her phone while glancing up every now and then in search for either one of the two. Compared to her earlier excitement, she could feel the lump growing in her throat, by this point. She knew she was overthinking things, and yet Bambi could feel her nerves growing. What if Beckett didn't actually want to hang out at all, but couldn't bring himself to reject her request for a ride home? He could just feel obligated to drive her home since they were project partners for so long, and essentially, she could've unknowingly forced his hand. She wasn't sure, though she hoped that it wasn't the case. She liked to think that the other also enjoyed her company.

Though, she also liked Beckett. A lot more than she should, considering their circumstances. Not only that, but the fact that Beckett also had a girlfriend. It wasn't as if Bambi was going to go for it knowing that he was taken, she would never do that, but she still wanted to pursue a friendship at the very least. She wasn't the type to steal someone else's boyfriend, instead, she'd much rather just fall into a painful, exhausting, one-sided love. Even so, she could tell that Beckett's girlfriend didn't like her very much. Even despite knowing that the two of them had been paired against their will, and had to meet for school purposes in the beginning, Beckett's girlfriend still glared at her as if Bambi was all over Beckett.

But whatever, she supposed. It was what it was, and maybe if Bambi was in her position, she may have understood why. But she wasn't, and although Beckett's girlfriend was watching her every move half of the time, she still wanted to hang out with him. A part of her did feel a bit guilty, but she wasn't exactly sure why. Maybe it was over her feelings, but she couldn't control those, and she's definitely tried. Either way, she could keep her feelings at bay, at least.

Watching the two of them make their way over, she couldn't help the small grin that made its way to her face. She pulled herself off of the wall she was leaning against and met them as they approached, [b]"Hey, thanks for the ride." She quipped easily, walking alongside the two of them as they exited the building, "So the usual place for pizza and milkshakes?"

She decidedly avoided conversation on the fact that they haven't had a real talk or hung out in a while, at least for the time being. Bambi could bring it up later, over pizza, or something. Or at some other point. For the time being, she just wanted to enjoy the two's presence, and not only that, but she figured it would be a better talk for just her and Beckett. It really could have been all one-sided, but she felt like they had things to resolve. Such as whether or not they wanted to be friends, like [i]actual friends, and not just ones that only texted. As much as texting was a good way for them to still talk and stay connected, it wasn't as though it was actually any worthwhile conversation. Their texts felt almost as though they were only acquaintances again.

However, for the time being, she had to focus on the diner that they were headed towards.
