|
hands shoved in his sweatshirt’s pockets, he strolled through the city, sauntering through the shadows. part of him was convinced that these people could see him and his teenage antics every moment of every day. whether he snuck around at godawful hours or if he walked in broad daylight, it would make no difference to the brothers. he still couldn’t bring it in himself to stop from doing so. no warning had showed up at his house, nothing bad had happened so far, after all the years he’d been doing it. it was just a boy doing boy things; how dangerous could that possibly be? rui never was a fan of sneaking out past curfew but, honestly, aika couldn’t bring himself to worry.
see, rui worried too much. in an odd way, perhaps that was why the two of them got along so well. rui was the cowardly lion, while a was the brave soldier. the yin and the yang. they’d basically grown up together - childhood friends - and had been inseparable ever since. everyone in the wall had someone they’d miraculously known ever since they could remember, though; it wasn’t anything out of the ordinary, he supposed. just. something about aika and rui’s friendship was… better, he supposed.
or maybe he was just a bit biased.
he came to a stop once he neared the familiar house, wandering towards the same place he stood most nights as he picked up some pebbles from the landscaping they had done at their house. for a moment he stood there, running his tongue over his lip before taking the wind-up and throwing the pebble up to the window. click. and then he waited. nothing came. oh, don’t tell him rui was already sleeping. he threw another pebble- click. nothing. another--
and then there was rui, opening the window and barely missing the launched pebble. [b]“about time! what took you so long?†he whisper-shouted to the other, feeling his lips tugging into the faintest of smirks as he shoved his hands back in his pockets. “c’mon, get out here and let’s go.†he didn’t even leave room for rui to protest. he knew whatever he said went in their friendship. i mean… although it hadn’t been that long since they’d gone to their little hiding place, away from the rest of the world, aika always found himself wanting to go, wanting that breath of fresh air that he hadn’t known was missing from his life. a glimpse of… what was that word? freedom. it wasn’t a word that was commonly used, anymore. did rui feel this ‘freedom’ too? he didn’t know; he’d have to ask, sometime.

the ceiling was a concept that had grown to be quite familiar to rui over the years. his fascination with the surface had started promptly at age five, after being separated from his family and being placed in his first house - home of the adolescents.
at the time, the young male was distraught, cursing its name; the small, crowded building was anything but a home. it was a prison, in which rui knew absolutely nobody and just wanted to see his mother again. that night, the brunette laid in bed, hands folded on his chest as his teary eyes stared above. the starkness of the ceiling had been the only familiar thing to him. several years and houses later, this fact remained true.
however, as time passed, memories faded. rui grew. grew and learned, taught to forget the past and focus on the now; now, and what he could do to improve the now for the society. rui was taught to disregard his own feelings as they simply got in the way of his work. and yet, when night time came around, the ceiling became a symbol for the life he still remembered - in pieces, maybe but still remembered - despite being told to forget.
the ceiling was rui's first transgression. the second came along shortly after that first night in the form of a boy of similar height and lack of teeth, sneaking out of his own bed to comfort rui. from there, several more offenses began to manifest their way into rui's life, despite being a strict rule-follower. aika was always the exception.
years of staying up a few minutes past curfew eventually led to sneaking apples into coat pockets, which ultimately led to staying up a few hours after curfew and a very weary rui. the other male, of course, took their little adventures in stride, not quite taking the time to overthink absolutely everything that might go wrong ever - a skill in which rui was very well endowed.
although, even after racking his brain for consequences and punishments and warning aika about what could happen, he always went along anyway. deep down, some part of him enjoyed that inexplicable feeling their escapades allowed. even if he woke up the next morning unable to explain his dark circles to the brothers, it was worth it - which was why instead of being woken up to the telltale pang of rocks against his window, rui had laid awake anticipating them.
he scrambled out of his bed, sparing a brief glance to his bedroom door before grabbing his jacket from the floor. even now when he lived with a family instead of a dorm, the brunette couldn't help but worry that a guard would come in at any second to see if he's sleeping. another pebble smacked against his window, and rui silently cursed the other male as he slipped on his tattered sneakers.
unlatching the window as quietly as he could, the brunette stuck his head out. "i'm here, i'm- dammit, aika!" rui whispered angrily as he glanced back at the rock that nearly knocked him out. he whipped back to the other male, a frown etching its way onto his features. "do you know what time it is? i can't be dressed at your beck and call, you know." because he totally wasn't dressed and ready to go, nope. not at all.
rui kicked his legs out of the window, sliding out of his room to land on the neatly trimmed grass beside aika. "what do you have planned tonight?" he asked begrudgingly, sticking his arm back through the window to grab his satchel and swing it over his shoulder. "it better be worth it," who was he kidding, it always was. "i can't be doing this every night, not with work starting soon, a." rui sighed, straightening up to meet eyes with the other male. he mustered up a small smile, quirking an eyebrow to await the other's response.

|
after years of thought, aika had once come to the conclusion that everyone used to be dreamers- much like him. however, after years of being taught not to think that way - or, more like, being taught to think one single way, those dreams and sense of adventure had been lost in space. dreams and individual thought became thoughts shared by the masses, no individual’s thought much different than the thought of someone’s idea right next to them.
throughout the years, though, aika had began to wonder if that was even right. it felt like it was just him and rui against the world, two black sheep, two odd ones out- even with rui masking it a lot better than aika could. they were both one in the same in that sense; they both knew the consequences, the risks-- but their curiosity was so bright. only thing different was that a’s curiosity always seemed to get the best of him, and sometimes it took rui to tell him that some things... just weren’t meant to be done.
as the man of the hour appeared at the bedroom window, obviously frustrated at the ordeal of almost getting hit by a rock, he couldn’t help but barely, barely contain his laughter. [b]“but you’d never disappoint me, dear friend,†he dramatically countered at the other’s own quip, his shoulders finally relaxing - not even realizing he’d been tensed in the first place. “oh, it’s not that late, anyway. where’s your sense of adventure?â€Â
rui made his exit with practiced ease. the first time he’d climbed out the window, it hadn’t been nearly as graceful, nor as accepting of the law-breaking decision. why rui even decided to stick around with him was a mystery. everything about a’s way of thinking only spelled trouble. rui would probably be better off without his company- but where was the fun in that?
“i want to go out to those trees a ways over." shifting the weight of his feet onto one leg, he cocked the other hip slightly. he hesitated, debating whether or not to explain why- simply to cave and carry on, "you know when you get away from lights and everything from the city, you can see a whole other world, up there?†his gaze lifted up to the sky, then, squinting and trying to see this other world he’d heard about. however, like every time he'd looked, it was simply pitch black. “stars, planets… sounds interesting, don’t you think?†he’d heard about it all, but it was never something he’d really gotten to see. today, though, they’d change that. they’d both get to see that world for themselves.
his gaze wandered back to the other man, finding his lips purse into a thin line, a short ‘pfft’ passing his lips. “oh-ho, getting too good for me? got a hard-worker on our hands.†he lightly jabbed the other’s shoulder before he spun on his heels and started leading them towards the forestry. as they made their way carefully through the town, he paused in thought before asking quietly, “when do you think you’re going to stop tagging along? … thinkin’ when you start working?â€Â
everything wished for rui to say that that couldn’t possibly happen-- but one couldn’t help but wonder… one couldn’t help but silently hope.

"whatever," he huffed, crossing his arms over his chest. rui shifted his weight from foot to foot, gnawing on his lip in an attempt to ease whatever anxiety he knew would bubble up at some point. "it's only like, two hours past curfew," he glanced up at aika, sighing. "but whatever."
listening to the other's plans for the night, rui couldn't help but look at the other in awe. how on earth did he come up with these ideas? more importantly, where did he find the confidence to execute them? rui really needed to know.
"stars?" he questioned, the word unfamiliar on his tongue. of course, the brunette had heard of them, but they were one of many things that seemed so incredibly unreachable from their little world. despite this, rui couldn't help but wonder. asking questions about things from before wasn't allowed, of course, but it was times like these in which he was able to feed his curiosity. even if it was simply talking about it, some part of him was satisfied. glancing up at the endless black sky, rui sighed. "yeah... it does sound pretty neat," he relented, unable to deny that fact.
it didn't take long for him to snap out of his reverie, however. he shook his head, a frown deepening as he looked back at aika. "those are just rumors, anyway." everything the pair had heard about space was the result of forbidden exploits to abandoned buildings, full of torn papers filled with unfamiliar words. of what they could make out, aika took immediate interest. hell, they both did. but rui never thought it'd come to this. "what- what if they're not true, and then we get caught for being out past curfew, or for being in the forest, or both, and it was all for nothing, and then-"
he was cut off by the other's disapproving stare, clearly tired of this topic and wanting to get going. rui pouted, looking him in the eyes with a pleading look. but to no avail, of course, as aika began to poke fun as he was pulled away from his home. they began to weave through their city, a place equally familiar and unfamiliar to the pair.
a shy smile found its way onto his features as the other began to tease him. "you know that's not true." he sighed, allowing himself to be dragged along. a brief silence fell between the two, both clearly deep in thought. "it's just-" rui paused, trying to iterate his feelings properly. "i can't help but worry for the future, you know?"
the idea of success has been hammered into their minds from a very young age; without it, we would be nothing. each person must contribute equally to the society to ensure success, to ensure happiness and wealth. and with rui being rui, he couldn't help but fret about what might happen if he didn't abide by this belief. the brunette pulled his hand away from the other, slowing down and pulling his arms up to his chest."i think i'm going start next month," he started, "at least, that's what i was told."
whether or not this warranted the halt of their adventures, rui couldn't tell you. ideally, yes, the start of work should put an end to this thing they had going on. but deep down, he knew that if aika were to ask him to do anything, be it going to the forest or jumping off a cliff, he would follow. "i guess only time will tell."

|
two hours past curfew. there had been rumors of people getting in trouble for being out for two minutes past curfew. while they were just rumors, and rumors had yet to be proven fact, he knew that their escapades could only get them in big trouble once they were caught.
[b]“but what if the papers turn out to be true, rui?” he cut the other off before he could ramble himself into a fit of anxiety. he stared at him for a long moment before repeating, "what if they're true?" and that was the only reason that aika ever needed. one adventure had them finding a building full of abandoned papers, filled with so many things unheard of in this world. the papers almost seemed to be in an entirely different language- but they had intrigued rui and aika, nonetheless. rui had seemed to hold interest in them, but he never seemed to have quite the same fascination as aika. a wanted to explore this realm of possibility-- rui, meanwhile, seemed pleased enough just to hear of it and nothing more.
tonight, though, they were changing that. shoving his hands in his pockets, he walked throughout the city. it was eerily quiet, and part of him wondered if there were brothers out here. no sound of footsteps. nothing. his gaze wandered towards the other as he spoke, watching him as the other got lost in deep thought. “you always worry,” aika pointed out in a deep breath, turning his gaze up to the dark sky before adding, “you worry too much, honestly.” but… aika worried, too, sometimes. he usually didn’t voice his concerns, or even show his worries, but he did have those same emotions.
the start of rui’s job would mean the other would have to cut ties with his childhood friend. it didn’t seem like a thought either of them were willing to admit, but it always burned the tip of his tongue. rui wouldn’t have time for these little antics, anymore. he’d be assigned a job, someday assigned a family, and his past memories were aika forgotten. only time will tell. he pondered the thought, feeling a swarm of emotions before softly saying, “yeah. guess you’re right.”
aika went unusually silent the rest of the way to the trees - forrest was the word. once they’d gotten to the foliage, he stopped for a second, turning to rui and commanding, “don’t look up, yet. i want us to see them at the same time.” this was an absolutely ridiculous adventure; aika probably seemed like a mad man, wishing to see these things called ‘stars.’ but his curiosity simply called him to go out.
they walked. they went further and further from the city, such a ways away that they were basically standing in pitch black darkness. he’d grabbed the other’s hand, in hopes that they wouldn’t lose each other. after a few minutes of anticipation, he slowed to a stop. “okay,” he whispered, spinning around to face rui. grabbing both of the man’s hands, he searched the other’s features. he could just barely make him out in the darkness. “okay, i think we should be far enough to see. ready?” with a deep breath, he said, “look up.”
and then he did- and in that moment, it was everything. it felt like his breath had been taken away, stolen by the sight of thousands of speckles dusting across the previously blank canvas. “oh my g- those are stars! those are actual, real-life stars!” he whispered in unconcealed amazement. hesitantly, he let go of one of rui’s hands to hold it up the sky, as if he could possibly hold them in his hand. “and- a-and they form and make these shapes called- consolations? … constellations.” he squinted as he glanced at the sky lights, trying to search for one of those things once unheard of.
still, all he could do was rest his free hand back down to his side - other hand still grasping firmly to rui’s own - unable to turn his gaze from their amazing discovery. “it’s... beautiful.”

akia had a point. rui often found himself spiraling down a hole of "what if", struggling to see the other side of the situation. whether this was a good or bad thing, he couldn't tell you. but that's why he had the other male, to ground him, to remind him of the good possibilities. they balanced each other out, and that's what mattered. "fine," he mumbled, "it'd be pretty cool if they were true, guess."
"what's wrong with worrying?" he muttered softly, kicking at the ground and pouting. "one day, we're gonna get caught and i'll never forgive you." as far as he was concerned, worrying never got you in trouble. worrying never put you at risk for a punishment. exploring forbidden territory, however, does. it puts you at quite a big risk, actually. especially when you can't even begin to fathom what your punishment may be because staying up past curfew and trespassing were both unspeakable crimes. so. they had that going for them.
despite the bite in his words, there was no real malice behind them. if anything, they were more teasing than anything; he knew aika knew this. talk of the future and the inevitable separation that accompanied it, however, put a damper on the mood. rui's eyebrows knit together, uncomfortable with the thought of having to leave the other behind. it wasn't fair. the thought of getting ready for bed without some anticipation for what akia had planned or getting through the morning without a familiar face by his side. it just wasn't right.
"we'll be okay, though," the brunette offered, unsure whether he was trying to reassure akia or himself more. the two were left in a somber silence as they passed through familiar shortcuts behind houses and between buildings. the whole situation was one that had been relived multiple times in the years the two spent together; only this time, border lines weren't going to stop them.
whatever tension found its way between them immediately dissipated once they reached the boundary. rui couldn't help but stand behind the line for a brief moment, the moment almost feeling surreal. "gosh, we're actually doing this." he shook his head, bouncing on his feet anxiously as he watched the other step over without a second thought. "i'm actually doing this..." rui muttered to himself, shaking his head one last time before crossing over.
he didn't even bother questioning aika's request, simply nodding before walking forward. he'd never been a fan of the dark, but the adrenaline beginning to pump its way through his body made it easy to forget this fear. this was by far their most dangerous escapade thus far, and yet, any worries that rui had prior were replaced with excitement and curiosity. even if there are no stars, or planets, or space, at least he was able to feel - albeit temporarily - what his world would be like if it were just him and aika. no brothers, no society, just- them.
after what felt like hours but was probably only few minutes, the sound of akia's footprints stopped. rui quickly followed suit. he flinched upon feeling the other's hands on his, but instantly relaxed as he heard his voice. "okay," he nodded, squeezing aika's hands in reassurance. his own eyes were wide as he waited for the cue, and finally-
"oh," he breathed, unable to say much else. the sound of the other's voice filled his ears, but rui could only focus on the beauty above him. they were unlike anything he had ever seen before. stars. "they're real." the brunette whispered, turning his head in every direction in an attempt to take it all in. they were endless, going on for miles, past all that rui once knew.
the absence of warmth from his left hand caused him to redirect his attention to the still-rambling male before him, a small smile finding its way onto his features as the other rambled on. seeing the other's excitement evoked a feeling in rui he had never felt before. warmth bloomed in his chest, an inexplicable feeling that prevented him from looking away from what he could see of the other. beautiful.
akia was right. it was beautiful. everything about this moment was. it was hard to find beauty in most things of their world, so the word was only used sparingly. but, rui believed it to be perfect for this moment. the stars, the freedom, them - it was all so, so beautiful. reaching up to grab the other's hand, rui smiled. "you know," he started, squeezing both of his hands reassuringly. [b]"i know i worry a lot, but sometimes, there are things that make it worth it."

|
what was wrong with worrying? aika contemplated that question for a moment, eyes squinting slightly as he thought. [b]“that’s all that everybody does, here. everybody worries about- fame, and wealth, and family, and rules.†shrugging, the taller male pursed his lips together before deciding, “what would it be like if everyone didn’t have a care in the world?†if they were free from their own shackles. even aika was shackled down by his own problems, his own concerns- but he liked to think he worried less than the majority. and he liked to think he was the most free of them all.
“if we ever got caught, what’s the worst that could happen? just throw all the blame on me.†aika had never heard of what happened to rule-breakers. he’d never even heard of rule-breakers in the first place; but, he liked to think that if the time ever came down to it, he’d lay down everything so that rui still had a chance at life, here. he hoped they’d never get caught- but, honestly, he’d risk everything so that his friend could still be a functioning part of society. everything, because he’d been the one to drag rui into this world of innocent rebellion in the first place.
even as rui offered they’d be okay, aika chose to remain silent. rui couldn’t promise something like that, not to aika. they couldn’t keep up this antics for long, and deep down, he knew that things like seeing stars, and other miraculously amazing things would have to come to an end. it wasn’t a road he wanted his mind to travel down, though, and for that, he simply chose not to talk about it.
but for now, it all felt so good. his eyes looked up at the stars, almost unable to wrap his mind around it all. it was something unheard of. how he’d love to experience this every night. he couldn’t even believe he’d been missing out on this sight for so long. beautiful was a word only saved for special occasions in this world, and aika liked to think that stars deserved the use of that word.
he’d been so busy gazing up at the stars that when rui had grabbed his free hand he felt like he’d been pulled back to earth again. he forced his gaze away from the blanket of stars above them to meet rui’s gaze. the stars were reflecting in the other’s eyes, and the sight was just- better than looking at the stars, themselves. “you think so?†he breathed at the other’s words, feelings his lips twitching, fighting a rare smile. something about the remark was so warming, something that brought- what was the word on those papers? happiness. but. so much stronger.
he couldn’t ignore the small flutter in his chest. it was a feeling so weird, and so new. he’d always been the adventurous type, and everything in him was wanting to explore the foreign feeling. there were so many things that a had read about, read about unexplainable feelings and foreign words. always yearning to tell rui about this whole new world he knew about.
the moment was so beautiful. and now- now felt like his chance to say something. the same thing that had been on his mind ever since he read those papers. “rui-†he started, squeezing the other man’s hands gently in his own. “in these papers i read, they talked about this thing-†taking a deep breath, he searched the other’s gaze before carrying on, “it’s called soulmates. it’s hard to explain-- but the main reason i’m even saying all this is because i think you--â€Â
lights.
they suddenly lit up on one side of them, from where the pair had come from. voices carrying. he couldn’t help but curse under his breath at the realization. without much thought, he turned, tugging rui with him. “c’mon, we gotta go.†he wasn’t going to wait around and let them be sniffed out by the brothers. he could feel his heartbeat pounding loudly in his ears as they started a mad dash, hearing commotion over his shoulders. “over there!â€Â
this wasn’t good. rui had been right. what if they’d gotten caught? what if they were going to get caught? and it was all aika’s fault. he could feel an apology burning the back of his throat as he ran, dodging tree trunks and flashlights that seemed to appear from out of nowhere. he was sorry, rui. he was so, so sorry.

the way in which aika looked at him was so... indescribable. truly, the brunette could not think of a single word to express the way he had felt in that moment. the burning in his chest only roared harder the longer they stared, its warmth slowly making its way to his cheeks. it was unlike anything rui had ever felt before, and he couldn't pick it apart- it wasn't a bad thing. it sure as hell wasn't bad, just... confusing. unfamiliar.
the feeling only got more intense, until the brunette couldn't help but avert his gaze back to the stars. it almost felt like he could vomit. "y-yeah," rui stuttered, cheeks still burning. "i'm sorry for being, i dunno, paranoid all the time," he sighed, eyes searching the sky for something else, something beyond. for something to hold onto, so that he would never let this moment go. "but, yeah. seeing this makes it all worth it." risking a glance back at akia, rui smiled shly. "so t-thanks, i guess," he started, gaze quickly shifting down to his feet as he kicked at the leaves. "for bringing me here."
hearing the other speak his name brought rui's attention back to him and his inexplicable gaze, and for a brief moment, he wondered why he ever looked away. perhaps this moment could also be described as beautiful, just as the stars above them. rui believes that he'll start using that word a lot more often. he couldn't help but look down to their joined hands as akia continued speaking, listening to every word with a small smile on his face. he ran his thumb over the other's without even thinking about why, just that it felt right, and they really need to do this more often.
aika cuts off himself off, leaving rui hanging. he quirks an eyebrow at the other male, the same small smile lingering on his features as he waits for him to finish. however, the longer the silence stretches on, the more the good feeling starts to fade and anxiety settles back in. "a-akia?" he questions timidly, a worried look making its way onto his features.
but then he sees it. them.
out of the corner of his eye, rui sees light. light that sure as hell didn't come from the sun, and it was far too early for the city to start coming to life, meaning only one thing. "is- is that-" he stammered nervously, risking a glance behind him only to be met with the brothers and their blinding flashlights. before he could fully process exactly what was going, he was being dragged away by the other male.
as soon as they start running, it hits him. "oh. oh my god, aika," he cried out softly, tears beginning to blur his vision, burning his eyes and now, he really could be sick. the brunette tightened his grip on the other's arm, willing his already fatigued legs to go faster, please, faster. don't get caught, don't let them catch up, god dammit. he choked out a sob, feet scrambling to carry his weight further.
this was it. all of the fears and anxiety building up throughout his years spent with aika finally coming true, almost like some cruel joke. is it still worth it? he can't help but think as he struggled to keep up with the other male, the footsteps of the brother behind them getting louder with their voices. is this what you wanted?
no, god, no! because now, what was going to happen to them? the mere thought of breaking the rules never failed to make rui shutter, but there was always comfort in aika. oh, aika, who was always calm, willing to explore and deal with rui's bullshit. and now, they were going to be punished. dealt with in ways that they couldn't even begin to fathom. would they be separated? obviously. starved? tortured? killed?
the thought forces another harsh sob out of the brunette, his legs beginning to grow shaky beneath him. they feel like lead, barely able to carry him any farther and the brothers, they're right behind him, his vision is already blurred from the tears but now their light is making it harder to see and he can't breathe, his chest burns - not in the good way - and he's beginning to lose his grip on aika, and, and-
he trips.
he reaches out to brace himself, palms skidding across the rough ground and elbows giving out under his weight. a boot presses itself between his shoulder blades, digging him further into the ground and knocking the air out of him with a wheeze. the tears keep falling as he drops his head down in the dirt in defeat, choking out sobs. "aika-" he cries out with all that he can, but boot presses harder, cutting him off.
"do you know what you have done?" a deep voice spits at him from above, causing rui to flinch. he's pressed impossibly harder into the ground, struggling to breathe more than ever. the lack of response results in a kick to his side, knocking the air out of him once more as he curls in on himself. "take it easy on him," another voice says from further away, and a few moments later, the weight is lifted. a light is shone in his face, and rui can't see.

|
everything had been going so well. only moments ago, aika had felt like he was on top of the world. he’d witnessed stars - “a whole other world right above you,†as he’d read from the papers. he’d had rui, his best friend holding his hands, thumb leaving featherlight touches over the back of his hand, giving him pleasant chills. this was a feeling he’d never experienced before. he’d read about it, before-- but explaining it was a whole other level of difficult.
before he could even try to explain his ‘soulmates’ theory, though, everything had crumbled right in front of him. it had been replaced by fear, and worry- because they were going to get caught if aika didn’t do anything fast. and it was all his fault. that was all he could think as they tore through the forestry, basically fighting for survival as they ran along. [b]“it’s okay, it’s okay!†he tried to assure rui as they ran, glancing back at his friend only to see tears welling in his friend’s eyes and- and those tears were all his fault. “don’t look back. just run!†and that was all that he could hope for.
the brother was right on their heels, but it seemed like if they ran for just a while longer, they’d be able to outrun him. there was a chance that they could get out of this unscathed. he felt his heart soaring at the thought-- only for it to quickly plummet once the grip on rui’s hand had slipped, scrambling to a stop at the sudden realization. rui had fallen. he had spun around to try and save him, but before he could even take another step towards the other, the harsh slam of a boot on his friend’s back made him flinch. hearing his name cried out by rui- it hurt more than he’d be willing to admit.
“get off of him!†he’d started to barge his way closer to the brother, only to suddenly see someone appear from the shadows. he barely had that long to react before the shadow-man’s fist collided with his face. shit. his arms were harshly grabbed and put behind his back, struggling against the grip as the man lead him closer to where the brother and rui were. “gotcha.â€Â
“take it easy on him. they’re just kids; they probably don’t know any better than this.†someone was arguing their case? he could hear the two squabbling. the world just seemed to be collapsing around him, and he found it hard to focus on what the pair was saying. ....they knew what they were doing! … they might’ve known what they were doing, but these kids don’t deserve to get killed! … don’t deserve it? who are you to say who deserves to live and who dies?.... the words made little to no sense to him. he just knew that there was nothing he could say to make it better.
he struggled against the brother’s grip, only for a harsh kick in the back of the knees to send him to the ground, a grunt in agony as he did so. then one word in particular rang through the mumbled words. expel. what did expel mean? he saw them both finally reach an agreement, giving a grim nod of their heads before they finally directed their attention to the two boys on the ground.
“we don’t accept rule-breakers in our society. you’re lucky we’re letting you keep your lives.†something dangerous flashed in their eyes, then, as they ominously added, “but if i were in your shoes, i’d be wishing i were dead. you two are expelled from the society. we don’t need scum like you rotting our people.†expelled.
the same brother from before was pulling him harshly back up, dragging him further away from the city-- towards the wall. while previously he’d been confused, suddenly everything made sense. they were getting thrown out of the wall? no. no this couldn’t be happening. “wait! he didn’t do anything! let him go! i-i forced him to come here! take me, just- let him go! please! i’m sorry!â€Â
all the words seemed to be of no use, though, as they simply trudged forward, to a place aika had never been before. he’d never gotten to be so close to the wall- and, suddenly, he wished he could run as far away from it as possible. they scanned the wall with some kind of card, a part of it opening just enough. he struggled, writhed against his captors. “maybe this’ll teach you,†he was told, before he was roughly shoved -- and was sent outside of the wall.
turning around, he watched the faces as they disappeared behind the wall. “no, no, no.†he scrambled to the wall, the small opening- but by then, all he did was run into the closer wall. his hands rested on the structure, taking a deep shaky breath. “let us in!†he yelled, going up to the wall and slamming his forearms against it. “let us in!†nothing.
out of disbelief, weighed down by absolute shock, he fell to his knees. his head rested against the wall, and there he stayed. he could feel the tears pricking his eyes, but he didn’t want to acknowledge them. he didn’t want to acknowledge them, because it’d only bring to light how badly he’d screwed up. “i’m sorry, rui. i’m so sorry.†he turned his teary eyed gaze over to the other, searching his gaze. for forgiveness. something, anything.
“it’s all my fault, isn’t it?â€Â
////dump the lack of writing all over this pls. if you missed rping then wow you're blessed with these two

the sound of aika's voice provided temporary comfort to the brunette, but was soon replaced with regret as he heard the sound of his body hit the ground somewhere beside him. why on earth did he call for him, god dammit, aika could have gotten away! but now, here they lay, vulnerable, defenseless on the dirt at the mercy of the brothers. if he wouldn't have fallen, they wouldn't be here. hell, if he hadn't cried out for aika, at least he would be okay.
guilt causes rui to curl in further on himself, the voices of the men above him going completely over his head while he tries to just breathe. while he still can at least. the fragments of their conversation that he catches provide absolutely no comfort, instead supplying him with the information that they're gonna get killed, or expelled, or something, and rui thinks he's too young to die. not like this, at least.
before he can break himself down any further, he's pulled up under the arms, bringing him back to earth. he sees aika, but has to avert his gaze as he stumbles forward. his shoulders sag and aika's distressed voice fills his ears, and for once, he just wants him to be quiet. to accept what's going to happen to them.
if anything, trying to fight back would only make matters worse for them, if that was even possible. his eyes stare ahead, emotionless; the grip underneath his arms starting to hurt a little bit but he doesn't really care at this point. his feet somehow carry him forward, closer to the end.
they reach a wall, the one he'd heard so much about it from both aika and the brothers at school. upon first hearing about it, aika had looked at him with such a look that rui couldn't help but feel giddy. one day, he knew, they would finally see it. but never would he have imagined this situation. there was no excitement, no moment like they had had only a few minutes prior. instead, there was dread, fear and god, please don't let this be the end.
rui is pushed forward, and suddenly, there's silence. his eyes stare ahead, tuning out the sound of akia's voice. instead, he thinks about the world behind him, not beyond. he sees nothing but barren land ahead of him, a stark contrast of the life of their city, their home, filled with mile-high buildings and neatly trimmed trees and life. but here they were, now, scum, alone and left in the dust. literally.
he slides down the wall to sit beside akia, the silence louder than ever before. he spares a glance over to the other male, and the expression on his face breaks him even further. rui simply shakes his head, new tears beginning to pour over as he looks away and up to the sky. "it's okay," he chokes out after a long moment, voice barely audible. he isn't quite sure what else could be said, so he presses his lips together and exhales through his nose.
pulling his knees to his chest, rui keeps his eyes fixated on the sky. "aika," he started, shifting himself closer to the other male. "the stars." the balls of light remained, shining impossibly brighter. how could something so beautiful continue to shine when it felt like the world was falling apart?
"what do you think is going to happen?" he asks softly, resting his head on the other's shoulder without looking away from the sky. it was a pointless question, for they knew the answer, but part of him wished that akia would tell him that it'd all be okay, that they would find their way back. or better yet, that this was all a terrible dream and they would be waking up anytime now.
but he knew what was really going to happen. tales of what lingered outside of the wall had been told from their childhood to quell their curiosity - uncivilized beasts who would kill you at first sight, poisonous food that would tear you apart from the inside, no homes, places to rest, no people. just you and the wild. this was the end for both of them. it was undeniable.
another sob forced its way from rui's throat before he could say anymore. the brunette turned to bury his face in the other's neck, not wanting the other to see him in such a vulnerable state. his body shook, and everything was so, so cold.
