"And if someone did?" Jīnhóng said, irises catching the glow of the chandeliers overhead. "What would you do?"
"I do not know," Lǐjié replied truthfully.
"But I would follow in your lead."
The princess glanced up at him, and let out a pleasant hum as she brushed the stray strands away from his face to tuck them behind his ear. They gazed at each other for what seemed to stretch into an eternity, before she spoke again:
"How goes the mission I assigned you? Do you think you will be able to assassinate the prince?"
"What would you do if I were to fail?" Lǐjié asked instead. Then, softly,
"Would you have my head?"
"Well..." A smile blossomed upon her traits, as she delicately ran her fingers over Lǐjié's neck, pausing just above his adam's apple.
"Yes."
"But I am already yours," he remarked, unflinching, as a tinkling laugh fell from her lips.
"I know that you would not kill me. You love me too much to see me die." It was a bold statement  one that Lǐjié had never been brave enough to voice in the past.
Jīnhóng paused, and there was an unreadable look in her eyes. Lǐjié remained silent, but the tension in his shoulders relaxed when her expression shifted to something that bordered on tenderness. Her voice was gentle, "
It would pain me to see you die, for perhaps my heart is yours as much as your head is mine. However..." Her fluttering touch tightened, ever so slightly, around his throat  and while her smile remained, pleasantly serene and unassuming, her gaze now flashed a warning:
"You would be wrong to think that I could not bring myself to kill a man that I love."
